EXPLORE

EXPLORING THE AREA

The countryside around Callaly is beautiful and varied.

To the south there is open heather moorland, to the east Thrunton Woods and Crags, and to the west/ northwest the Cheviot Hills and Northumberland National Park. Spectacular views can be enjoyed from the many footpaths and cycle tracks in the surrounding area. Our garden adjoins woodland and the area has an abundance of birds and wildlife. Many species of birds regularly visit the garden, including tits, finches, tree sparrows, nuthatches, treecreepers, woodpeckers, and, of course, pheasants! If you are lucky you may also see roe deer and red squirrels.

At night you can often hear owls calling, and as Callaly is situated in a dark sky area it is a great location for budding stargazers. We have no shop or pub but these can be found nearby, with the nearest convenience store, post office and petrol station at Powburn, public house in Glanton and restaurants in Thropton, with many more in Alnwick and Rothbury.

A short drive from Callaly lies the beautiful Breamish and Ingram Valley in the Northumberland National Park. Popular with cyclists, and affording many interesting walking routes with panoramic views of the Cheviot Hills. The Pennine Cycleway (route 68) passes about 5 miles west of Callaly, travelling up through Ingram and past Wooler, then joining other routes further north.

A little further south lies the picturesque village of Rothbury, offering a wide choice of shops, pubs and tea rooms, and a golf course beside the River Coquet. Possibly the most popular visitor attraction in this area is Cragside, the estate built by the Victorian inventor Lord Armstrong. Now owned by the National Trust, the house itself is fascinating to visit, being the first to be lit by hydro-electricity back in 1878. There are many footpaths to explore on the beautiful wooded estate with more outstanding views across the valley to the Simonside Hills, this area being another popular location for walkers.

The attractive market town of Alnwick is 10 miles east of Callaly and offers many shops and amenities, including supermarkets, restaurants, a golf course, theatre/cinema and leisure centre. Its famous castle, seat of the Duke of Northumberland, and the neighbouring Alnwick Garden with its fabulous tree house restaurant are highly recommended visitor attractions.

Alnmouth is 5 miles further east and has a lovely beach and golf courses. Here you will also find the nearest railway station on the East Coast line up to Edinburgh.
